Baby Dedication
Baby dedication is a ceremony where parents publicly commit to raising their child in the Christian faith, seeking God’s guidance and support from the church community. As a Christian parent, by dedicating a child to the Lord, you are acknowledging your need for God in your family; inviting God to be active in your family life; submitting your own desires for your child to God’s desires for him/her; making a commitment to raise your child in God’s way.
-
Public Commitment:
Baby dedication serves as a public declaration of a parent’s commitment to raising their child according to Christian principles and values.
-
Seeking God’s Guidance:
It’s a time for parents to acknowledge their need for God’s guidance and to place their child in God’s hands, trusting that God will work in their child’s life.
-
Family and Church Unity:
It’s a way for the church community to come together and support the parents in their parenting journey, praying for the child and offering encouragement.
-
Different from Infant Baptism:
Some Christian traditions practice infant baptism, while others, like some Baptist and non-denominational churches, practice baby dedication as a separate ceremony.
-
Emphasis on Parenting:
Baby dedication emphasizes the parents’ role as the primary faith trainers of their children, teaching them about God and His Word.
-
Celebrating God’s Gift:
It’s a time to celebrate the gift of a child and to give thanks to God for the privilege of parenting.
